On Friday, our last day in Thessaloniki, we drove west from Thessaloniki and visited the site of the Ancient Macedonian Capital of Pella. This visit showed us a city dating from 399 BC, yet laid out in even city blocks. The preservation of the mosiac floors is amazing. There is ongoing restoration work here and this site excavation only really began around 1960! We were happy to visit a new archaeological museum there which onlly opened in the fall of 2009. It was nice to see that even with the finacial difficulties in Greece, they continue to work to preserve their antiquities.
Here are the photos from this site.
