Last Saturday I boarded the German train in Berlin and rode to Frankfurt. This was a smooth, quiet pleasant ride across Germany. The train was on schedule and it was my first solo train ride in Germany, and it all went well. Craig met me in Frankfurt and we then went down to Heidelberg. Craig had attended a series of lectures by Dr. James Thompson from Abilene Christian (ACU) for several days during the week. He was also able to meet and reacquaint himself with other Christians from Germany and other surrounding areas.
We took this opportunity to visit friends we've had in Heidelberg. Particularly Mary and Karl Dreshel. While at ACU we came to Germany in 1970 with the Project Germany mission group. Mary then moved to Germany a few years later and had made her life here. It was great to reconnect and visit with her and Karl. On Sunday at church we were also able to briefly visit with Debby Osborne and her daughters. Debby and I grew up at the same church in Minnesota. I am repeatedly reminded that people we have known throughout our lives have ways of reappearing that we often do not anticipate. It is so wonderful to meet and reconnect with people. Although our time in Heidelberg was short, we were able to stop at the American Px and Commissary and add to our stash of American products.
Here are some photos I snapped as we drove home on Sunday afternoon. I just don't tire of looking at the beautiful countryside as we drive across Germany. I constantly think of what is the same, and what is different! We had planned on open house for Thursday evening for our German neighbors and my office so I threw in a few phots of the food. I didn't want to annoy people by taking their photos, so you just get to see the food.
